The current LA based musician was born in Kwara State, Nigeria. When asked where his love for music stemmed from, Alesh recalls the journey beginning when he was just 8 years old. He first started in the church choir with his mother, and later began writing songs at the tender age of 9. By 10 years old, he became the youngest member to join the adult choir in the church that he attended. From the choir, he began to be a lover of instruments and firstly engaged in learning how to play the trumpet. It wasn’t until he collided paths with his cousin that he discovered a deeper passion for the saxophone, the instrument that so encompasses his everyday life. Shortly after, Alesh moved to Lagos, attending School of Music in Lagos State University Nigeria, where he studied Theory of Music, majoring in Saxophone. Also ABRSM, UK. He later met Kunle Ajayi , and studied as his protégé for about 4 years. He then journeyed into the hands of Sammie Okposo and became the first saxophone player in his band, also staying under his wings for four years. While playing as a background musician with Sammie, he was privileged to play on the same platform with popular artists, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin , Hugh Masekela, & Isreal Hougton. After studying under such musical geniuses, Seyi branched off as a solo artist, later forming his own band and touring the city of Lagos locally. Now living in the US, Seyi has toured several cities including, Chicago, LA, Oakland, ATL, Maryland and more. Seyi is also Studying music in Berklee College of Music Boston USA, so far so good Seyi is doing so great in Boston with highest GPA.Originating from Nigeria, the African culture has strongly influenced Seyi’s sound. He states, “African music is mainly denoted by its poly rhythm beats which accentuates its richness. My music mainly incorporates the percussion because of its rhythm, giving it his own signature” When asked, what form of music he is more particular to, he states, “I believe that music is a style of nature so what I embody from my present environment is often times what I display. I don’t put myself in a box”. Alesh describes music as his life stating that music has given him a satisfaction of knowing that he is being able to contribute back to the world doing the one thing he loves to do, playing his saxophone. He loves the sound, the emotions as well as the expression that the saxophone exudes. He also plays the piano and the drums, but neither of those moves his heart the way the saxophone does. One distinction he loves most about the saxophone is that he is able to breathe life into the instrument in order to produce its sound, no comparison to wind instruments. Seyi compares his sound to no one, but states that musical artists, Hugh Masekela, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, Charlie Parker, and many others have influenced his passion for music. His vision is to bring souls alive with the sound of music by being a blessing to this present generation using the gift that God has given him. His ultimate desire is simply to beautify the world through his music. When Seyi Alesh isn’t ministering, he’s simply mastering his techniques on the saxophone, always looking for the latest equipment to better enhance his sound. He also enjoys hanging out, going to the movies and swimming. He’s just a regular guy with a genuine love for the sax.
